About Nicola

I grew up on the south coast of England - hence my love for the sea. I started beach combing many years ago at a very young age.

Being a collector by nature, while travelling to near and far off places around the world I combined my interest in surfing with scouring the beaches at every opportunity - gathering shells stones glass wood seeds - anything that caught my eye in fact. I found beauty in the simplest shell or the smallest fragment resulting in an ever growing collection. Something needed to be done with it or else I might as well bin the lot! But I had no ideas - I simply collected more and more!

The first step was to categorise this vast amount of material. Then I started arranging them in linear patterns - gradually more and more ideas developed resulting in the pieces/pictures that I now create. The positioning of each unique piece and its placement in relation to the next one is of utmost/great importance to make it read almost like an ancient script. It is a process that I enjoy - finding just the right piece.

As a beach lover, I am always aware of the rubbish that ends up on the sands. So while I am collecting material for my art, I always spend some time picking up any rubbish I come across  - particularly the small pieces of plastic and the nylon fishing line net that can be so harmful to sea life.
